♥ おせち料理を英語で♪ （その2）

おせち料理をたくさん食べて
明日からお仕事、という人も多いのではないでしょうか?

わたしもその一人です。

が、おせち料理を英語で説明できるように
なりましょう!

さて、昨日の続きです。

「煮物」
いろいろな野菜をお鍋の中で
ぐつぐつ一緒に煮込まれますが
それは家族がいっしょに仲良く過ごせますように
という願いが込められています。

"Boiled vegitables in a pot"
Veggies like "taro" potatoes, carrots, Japanese radish, and Japanese mushrooms are boiled together seasoned with soy source, sugar, rice cooking wine, etc. in a big pot.
It means that we wish for our families to stay always close and be in good relationships.

Sometimes we put "renkon" (lotus roots) in the pot.
We like to use lotus roots for the NewYear's dishes
because it has lots of holes which you can see through.
It implies that we pray that we may be able to see our future
with hopefully no obstacles like we can see the other side through lotus root's holes.


「えび料理」
えびは、ゆでると背が丸くなりますから
人も腰が曲がるまで長生きできますように
という願いが込められているおめでたい食材です。

Shrimp dishes
Shrimps get rolled up when they are boiled.
We see that as the old people tend to bend their back,
so we consider shrimps are very festive ingredients because
we see shrimps as the symbol of long life.
We want to live longer even though we have to bend over like shrimps.

色々ありますね～～。

食材の一つ一つにお祝いの意味と
幸せを願う気持ちが込められています。

♥ Happy New Year! おせち料理を英語で♪

今回はお正月ということで
日本のおせち料理の由来について
説明します♪


各地方や時代によって多少の違いが
あるとは思いますが、
基本的にはみんな幸せに新しい年を迎え過ごしたいという
願いをこめたお料理です。

 

日本のお正月-おせち料理の由来

Japanese New Year’s dishes

重箱に入れるのは、おめでたいことを重ねたいからです。

New Year’s dishes are served in the square boxes piled with two or three of them.

It shows their good wishes that the New Year will bring many blessings “piled up” in their lives.

♥「田作り」　かたくちイワシを甘辛く煎り、ごまをまぶしたもの。

昔は稲を植えるときにコイワシを細かく刻んで肥料にまぜていました。

「田作り」は今年もいいお米ができますように、という豊作祈願のため。

Dried sardine roasted with soy source, sugar, and sweet cooking wine, sprinkled with some sesame.

The word “Ta-zukuri” means “making good rice fields.”

Farmers used to sprinkle fertilizer mixed with minced dried sardine

when they planted rice in the spring wishing they would harvest abundantly in the fall.

♥「数の子」 ニシンの卵です。　たくさん子供が生まれて子孫繁栄を願います。

Herring eggs

Since herrings bear lots of eggs, people eat salt-preserved herrings, wishing for the prosperity of the family.

♥「きんとん」　さつまいもの甘いペースト状のもの

「金団」と書き、「財宝」という意味があり、

今年も豊かに暮らせるようにという願いを込めています。

Kinton is made of sweet potatoes. It looks like mushed potatoes but has beautiful gold color and tastes really sweet. Chinese characters for “Kinton” mean gold or treasures, so we wish for the great blessings financially as well for the new year to come.

♥「黒豆」

「まめ」は「元気に」という意味と「勤勉に（まめに）」

働けますようにという願いを込めています。

Black beans (boiled)

The word “mame” means beans. But the sound “mame” itself also means “healthy” or diligently.” So people eat sweet black beans wishing that we may be healthy and able to work diligently throughout the year.
